Start-ups, Knowledge Transfer & International Collaboration: Insights from South Korea!

March 19, 2025

How do universities and industries drive innovation together? InnovationsCampus Mobilität der Zukunft (ICM), KIT, NXTGN and TRACES explored this question in South Korea – and found inspiring answers.

🔹 In Pohang, we visited POSCO CHANGeUP GROUND, a 28,000 m², seven-floor innovation hub where start-ups and established companies work side by side to accelerate technology transfer. At POSTECH (Pohang University of Science and Technology), we gained insights into how research fuels entrepreneurship and deep-tech innovation.

🔹 A key highlight was our discussion at the German Embassy in Seoul with Annett Schwarz (Counsellor for Scientific Affairs) and Dennis Bloch (BMWK). We explored South Korea’s dynamic start-up ecosystem, economic trends, and potential collaborations – including formats that connect female entrepreneurs and women in science internationally.

🔹 Beyond start-ups, our visit to Sejong offered insights into smart urban development. The Autonomous Driving Big Data Control Center demonstrated how data can enhance traffic safety and reduce congestion, offering a glimpse into the future of urban mobility.

🔹 Unexpected but unforgettable: Meeting Ban Ki-moon, former UN Secretary-General, on a train to Seoul. A spontaneous and insightful exchange on climate action, sustainability, and global partnerships made this journey even more remarkable.

🔥 What’s next? With South Korea’s largest start-up event, NextRise Seoul, coming up in June, we look forward to deepening the ties between academia, start-ups, and industry. This visit was just the beginning – let’s continue learning from each other!
