The Japanese term kaikaku can be translated as ‘reform’ or ‘radical change’. The concept refers to an intervening direct change in processes, structures or technologies in order to increase their efficiency and effectiveness.
The establishment of the improvement takes place within a fixed time frame, which normally spans one working week. The change is initiated and implemented by management, i.e. a top-down approach is taken. The process is carried out in three phases: Preparation, redesign and implementation.
This method allows teams to try out innovative approaches and learn from the results in order to continuously improve. The ability to adapt quickly to new circumstances and requirements is of central importance.
